The Dead Mother/ My House is on fire
Being in HR, I thought I'd heard it all. Here are two more things that I've fired people for.Only use my mother died and I have to go the funeral once to get paid time off. I was new at the company and a woman came into my office in tears and said her mother died. We filled out the paperwork, and she took the paperwork to her manager to get it signed. The manager said she'd only sign the paper work with a photo of the body attached. Thinking that was insensitive, I called the manager into my office. After the manager explained that this employee's mother passed away last year I understood. I pulled her file, and sure enough over the past four years, she had requested paid leave for her "mother's funeral" five times. She was fired the next day.
Another employee called in sick, claiming her house was currently on fire, and she couldn't come in. Knowing that this employee was less than truthful, I called the fire department. Her house was not on fire, but they would go by and check it out. No fire, no smoke, nothing. If you're going to play hooky, say you're sick, not that your house is on fire. She was shown the door later that week.
