Stranded in NYC
I moved from Tokyo to be at this company in the Bay Area … after just 10 months, my manager came to me on the trade show floor at Internet World (in New York City), offered to buy my a coffee, took me to the refreshment stand, then while laughing nervously told me I was laid-off as of immediately. And when she said immediately, she meant it!Before dismissing me she made me change out of the logo booth shirt and relinquish my conference badge. She informed me that although this was day two of a four-day conference, the company wouldn’t pay for my hotel after that day, nor would they pay for any food or transportation, even to the airport. Best of all they wouldn’t pay for me to change my flight to return to SFO early! I was suck in NYC with no job, everyone I knew inside the conference and the prospect of a very expensive tab in a city I had gone to on behalf of the company.
I ended up bunking with a friend and eating off her tab at the same company for the remainder of the trip – and boy did we eat well!!
