Getting fired isn't the end of the world

When I got fired from the only job I'd ever really loved I thought it was the end of the world.
I was just about to be promoted to Business Office Manager. A coveted department head position. It would have been the fifth major promotion for me in the span of five years. I had even recently won the Employee of the Year award!
Then suddenly the Executive Director (who up until then had been campaigning hard at corporate for my upcoming promotion) began writing me up for the most mundane reasons. Example: The postage machine was kept under lock and key. A visiting corporate officer was attempting to use it when I told him he couldn't because it was locked. I unlocked it for him so he could use it. The write up stated that I told him he couldn't use it. Period. Two more equally outrageous write ups came in quick succession and I was fired.
Huh? Why?
It wasn't until the shock wore off a couple of weeks later that I remembered an incident that I had dismissed as totally inconsequential.
One evening the Executive Director had called me into her office and whispered that she had "borrowed" a couple of hundred dollars from the company checking account and wanted to reimburse it. She asked me what I thought would be the best way to do this. I replied that I wasn't sure what to do and didn't really think I should be the one to advise her on this. I left not thinking anything of it since it was a relatively small amount of money.
One month after I was fired by her she was fired herself! A bittersweet payback.
In the end it was the best thing that ever happened to me. One year and two jobs later I landed a position with the most awesome company (xxxxx). I started at the bottom and quickly rose up the ranks eventually making more money that I ever dreamed of.
Getting fired might seem like the end of the world at the time, but you never know where it might lead you.
