Where shopping was NOT a pleasure

The fastest I ever got hired and fired was when I applied for a job at a supermarket in Winter Haven, Fla. when I was a senior in high school. I needed a part-time job to pay for the gas in my ’66 Dodge Dart station wagon. After I filled out an application for store clerk, the store manager explained that I would be asked to do everything and anything .I would start out by scrubbing the toilets. Did I have a problem with that? No… When could I start? The next day, I excitedly replied. But what were my hours?

I’d have to come in right after school (around 4 o’clock) and work every night until midnight or 1 am. “But when would I be able to study and do homework?” I foolishly asked. After all, I was in the honors program and planned on going to college.

The manager slowly ripped up my application, tossed it in the trash, and said, “Well, I guess this means you won’t be working for us.” I was crestfallen. To think I might have made it all the way to being a produce or meat manager 30 years later!
