I had started a new job one August and everything was going great. My customers loved me, my fellow employees loved me, and even my boss seemed to love me. However, everything changed in December. Every year, the owner and his wife hosted the company Christmas dinner party at their home. My fellow employees had warned me, "Don't be the first person to leave the party-the first person to leave the party always gets fired." The party seemed to drag on and on with no real meaning or focus. Finally my wife and I decided it was time to leave. Yes, we were the first ones to leave. Sure enough, a few weeks later, my boss called me in to his office and told me that it just wasn't working out and he was going to have to let me go. The only reason he would give was "he had several complaints from customers about me" (but he couldn't give any examples) and that my "riding a motorcycle to work was not professional." He denied that it has anything to do with being the first to leave the Christmas party-but I can't say I wasn't warned.
