Small town blues

In 1999 my business had begun to stagnate, so I went looking for fresh opportunities. With the help of a friend, in 2001 I made my escape from Silicon Valley and launched my business in a small town in the beautiful Gold Country of the Sierra Foothills. But, it took time to grow my business, and so I picked up a part time office job in town after 9 frustrating months of trying to get a foothold for my business. Small towns being what they are, everyone knows everyone, and some folks help spread more "knowledge" around. I did my office job well enough to get three raises in a year and a half, and was very suddenly laid off due to business being "too slow." One month later, the town gossip, one of those "knowledge spreaders," was hired at a significantly lower rate of pay (always easy to find that out in a small town). My business tanked completely and I'm now back in Silicon Valley, desperately seeking a full time job. Great timing. HP just laid off thousands. I haven't got a prayer.
