Vacation
After finishing my Degree I returned to my small home town here in Newfoundland, Canada. After a gruelling interview process, 7 of them and 1 of me on the second interview, from many of the small town's "Leaders", I got the job helping develop new business for the town's airport. Now this wasn't the best crowd to work for collectively, but there were some good people. I reported to the Board of Directors who came from all over the town, including government, business, and even a lawyer. The lawyer was the Chairman.
After almost 2 years, I knew the organization was not flush with cash, but there was only me and an Administartive Assistant. I was the one who successfully marketed the airport, attended trade shows, created actual business for the airport. The Admin Assistant basically took minutes and tended the office for the Board, so for some reason I thought she would go before me. So I thought.
I left for vacation for 2 weeks, took my 9 month old son and wife on a road trip where we went to the US and began enjoying beautiful Maine. After a couple days I phoned home to check on things and my Mom said that the Chairman (the Lawyer) left a message with her for me to call him as soon as possible.
As soon as I finished talking with my Mother I called. He informed me that they were out of money to pay me, that when I returned I would be terminated, and that he needed to tell me now, while I was away on vacation because there is a requirement by law that he give me 2 weeks notice! He didn't want to have to pay me for 2 weeks when I got back.
I finished my vacation, went back to work as planned, and found out they were keeping the Admin Assistant to help the Board, though I didn't know what they would be presiding over now that the worker bee was gone. I guess actually drumming up business for the airport became secondary.
As side note, right after finishing work though, I put everyone back in the car a drove back to Maine for another week. I eventually left my home town for greener pastures.
