Falling in love
Fired for falling in loveIn April 2004, I was fired for falling in love with a co-worker. After the co-worker expressed vague interest in me initially, company management—that’s right, the store manager—took great pains as “matchmaker” to set up a relationship between the girl and me. She was far too young for me, and at first I resisted, somewhat embarrassed. But in the end I fell for her, hook, line and sinker. Then the young girl balked, as young girls usually do. I, however, had unfortunately fallen for her.
After the girl balked, the manager came to me asking if I could stay on, without pursuing a relationship. I said I would try. I did try. I failed. The manager’s take on it at that point was that I had violated “an agreement with management,” to cease and desist, and I was fired. Never mind the fact that the manager at xxxx Deli, Kerrville, TX, set the whole thing up.
I was fired for my persistence in actually following management’s lead, even though that persistence was only a note left for the girl, expressing my emotional investment in her, and asking for a decision, either thumbs up, or thumbs down—her decision.
