Fired for not working an unscheduled double shift on Valentine's Day
When I was young, I worked at a self-service gas station as an attendant. I had worked the evening shift the night before, and opened the gas station that next day (so not much sleep for me). That next day was Valentine's day. And as was sometimes the case for me, I had a date that night. When it came time for the end of my shift at 3:00pm, the next guy didn't show up.So I called the ownerboss. He said that he did not know where this guy was but that I should continue working until he showed. I told him I had a date, I had already worked 2 shifts back-to-back, and that he needed to either get someone else to cover or come down himself if this guy didn't show.
Well, the boss never calls back, and it's getting close to the time when I need to go home to shower and get ready for my date. So I call the boss back, and his wife answers. The boss isn't home. She lets it slip that the boss knew all along that my replacement wasn't coming. My replacement had called the boss to let him know he had gotten hurt and couldn't work. Man, I was pissed. The boss was expecting me to work three shifts in a row, miss my date, and was lying to me about it the whole time too!
I reiterated to her that I had a date that night, I had already worked 2 shifts in a row, and the boss needed to either get someone else to cover or come down himself.
I waited until the last possible second, then I closed the gas station and went home about 6:00pm (many hours before the usual 11:00pm closing time). It was a nice date ;)
The next day when I went to work the boss told me I was fired because I "closed the station early". No discussion, just fired. I didn't argue, because why should I argue with someone who boldy lied to my face?
