Radio Protest March--NOT!!
I have been fired many times in my working career, so I might have more than one story to tell, but they are all true. This first story involves a radio station that I worked at as a D.J. in the late 70's in San Luis Obispo, Ca.
My Program Director informed me that, in order to save money, the management had decided to "lower" my salary, since they figured that they could get "some college kid" to do my job for minimum wage!
Being a trained professional who actually went to school to learn my craft, this didn' t sit too well with me. I had many loyal listeners who would call me nightly to request music, and sometimes just "shoot the breeze" off-air, and I had made close friends with many of them. When I told them what was happening, several of them got together and decided to hold a protest outside the station in my honor! Well, when word of this impending party got around, the Program Director called a hurried meeting with me and begged me to call it off or we'd all be fired. I did as I was told, but I was fired the next week anyways for "Insubordination".
