Fired from Restaurant

I was working at a 24 hour restaurant during the 9pm-5am shift. I came on at 9:00 and found out that I had the outdoor section. Seeing as the restaurant was the only one in the area open past midnight and that the night was beautiful, I figured that I would make money.

However, there was a table of customers that were taking up two of the six tables in my section. They had paid their bill at around 8pm and had been sitting for an hour, not ordering anything.

In spite of their rudeness, I chose to ignore it, figuring that they would eventually leave. They didn't. They sat until 1 o'clock in the morning, virtually five hours in a restaurant without ordering anything, taking up two of my tables. Finally at 1 o'clock, they asked if they could have beer.

I was a little upset, to say the least, and proceeded to tell them so. I informed them that they had sat in my section for hours, costing me probably 1/3 to 1/2 of my income and that they could get their beer somewhere else. I was upset, but didn't say anything vulgar or insulting. I just told them that they needed to leave.

They wrote a letter to the owner of the restaurant, telling what I did. They said I ignored them through the night, which might have been true had they tried to order anything. But since they had already paid their bill, I assumed that they were done. It is also hard to be ignored if you don't say anything. Even though the manager on duty and the rest of the waitstaff said I was right, I was still fired. I'm still bitter to this day.
