About 5 years ago I was working at a discount tabacco retailer as a manager. I ran the store and worked 55 hours a week. I had myself demoted to assistant manager so that I could go to college and just work part time Since I was an assistant I worked part time in my store and another store nearby (giving the managers their days off). The store down the street was insanely busy and one day I had someone come in that I suspected of stealing a carton of cigarrettes. When he came back in later and I suspected him of stealing I confronted him about and he told me to go ahead and call the cops. I did and a full police report was filed. That night when I did inventory there were 2 cartons missing (of course). Two weeks later I was called in on my day off for a meeting with my district manager. I was told that I was being fired for stealing. I asked him for evidence and he handed me a statement from the manager of the busy store stating that a customer told her I had told someone to take a couple of cartons home. There are no cameras in the stores so there was no actual evidence. The fact that they had no evidence got me unemployment benefits and a month later the manager of the store was fired herself for stealing. (She was sneaking in at night on the days that her assistant worked so it would look like they did it.)
