I grew up as a military brat - both parents officers in Air Force and Navy - and made some very close friends over the years having lived all over the US and Europe. Both of my parents retired, I graduated and I moved to San Diego. One of my friends I graduated from high school with in Europe made a surprise visit to San Diego one week so I had asked if I could take a few days of the three weeks of vacation I had saved up. My boss told me that nobody was going to get their vacation for that year and since we couldn't roll it over we would just be paid the balance out. It had been several years since I had seen this friend and even asked if I could just have a Friday or a Monday to extend my weekend - and again denied. I figured I deserved at least one day off since I nomally worked 45-50 hours a week on salary - so I called in sick on a Friday and we drove to Los Angeles to spend some time together. We ended up going to Universal Studios and had a blast! There were some street performers outside the front gates as we were leaving - and the local news stations were doing live feeds.... yup, I was seen leaving Universal Studios on Los Angeles evening news all the way down in San Diego by my boss. I returned to work on Monday - only to have my final paycheck handed to me with all of my personal belongings from my office packed up and sitting at the reception desk. As I was packing my car my boss said "I guess you get that vacation now" and walked away. I guess I did - one week before I started a job that a company had been trying to recruit me for. Vacation, a job with a competitor, nice chunk of change from my final paycheck, and knowing that the company I got fired from got bought out by the new company I was working for and all the old managers lost their jobs. Life is great! :D
