I developed software for this company and was working on a difficult piece of code. To be thorough I had to spend an inordinate amount of time safe-guarding against a case that could only happen if the code was grossly misused. After a lot of time, I finally eliminated the possibility and out of frustration made the code return an error code that accused the user of not knowing what they were doing. Actually, I used the word STUPID in capital letters. I honestly meant to remove this later but unfortunately forgot and it slipped by code reviews and made it into the product. A year later apparently a customer high up in their company did just what I safeguarded against and hit this error message. The company I worked for was contacted and it was insisted that disciplinary action be taken. Namely I was fired!
