Never Volunteer - It's

The story is too long to give you all the details but the short version is that I volunteered to create a very complex training DVD for another department in my company. Worked on it for months at night and on weekends, invested thousands of my own money in new computer equipment and software but eventually was fired for it when my boss found out what I was doing.

The reason I was fired was, according to them, was that I was "using my position in the company to benefit myself and to take away opportunities that belonged to the company." Huh? Take away from whom exactly? They objected to the fact that I would "eventually benefit" from this volunteer work because I was gaining experience in an area I was interested and which might eventually help my career.

They called it a violation of their Ethical Standards. They also cited the fact that some of the videotaping occured in their offices which I didn't think would be a problem since the DVD was FOR THE COMPANY!

Oh well, SCREW THEM!

Sounds like you deserved a bonus instead of termination. If anyone needed to be fired (I can't understand the "violation of ethical standards" logic) it was in the other department you volunteered to help.

If I were your boss I would have given you a pay raise.

Some bosses are jerks and just plain jealous of what you can accomplish.
