Fired for taking unpaid vacation
Well, this didn't happen to me, but to a good friend of mine... I can't tell you where it happened since I work for the same institution. He worked for a State University, where they offered him an "emergency staff" position for his excellent work... promoted from a student position. This position cannot last more than 180 days, they needed him so badly, they offered him a "temporary staff" position, which still had no benefits but it just meant they could keep him a little longer. But temporary is obviously a temporary, a position where he can wake up tomorrow and find out that his services are no longer necessary.
This lasted about one year as a temp position. Since he wanted to start a family, he was frustrated by the fact that they offered no benefits and a regular full-time position for his outstanding achievements. One day, he was told that his regular full-time position paper work has been approved and will be ready within 3 weeks. He thought it would be good idea to take a vacation during that period, because the position already had gone through and he didn’t take a single day off for the whole year. So, he told his manager about the unpaid vacation and she said it was OK to do and congratulated him for getting the position.
During these 3 weeks, the whole management changed. The department gets taken over by another larger department. My friend comes back from his vacation and his manager's new boss tells him that he was told that my friend left the department to find a better opportunity somewhere else. PLUS, he left with a bad impression because his new boss told him, "I never had anybody walkout on me like that. Good luck." [The new boss leaves the room without shaking hands]
