Don't be alarmed if we fire you!

I had been working for this company for over a year. I loved my job and everyone I worked with. It was more like a family than a place to come to work. Our job was to monitor alarm signals that came if from homes and businesses and contact the proper authorities to respond. There were three monitoring stations spread out over the US and we had the best response time by far. At times our work was exciting and rewarding, especially if we stopped a break-in or a fire.

Then one morning, everyone was called into an emergency meeting. We had all been training for a new computer upgrade, so we expected the meeting to be about the computer shift. We were all stunned to find out that the company was closing down our monitoring station and shifting our responsibilities to the other two stations. We had another month of work, and then we would all be let go. The news hit everyone like a ton of bricks. Everyone went out and got extremely drunk after work, and was walking around like zombies for the few days. Our family was slowly split apart as people found new jobs.
