When I was 12 years old, I wanted to make some extra cash for atari games, and stuff like that, so I started mowing lawns, and such. Well, every Saturday, I'd mow the lawn of this seemingly sweet 82 year old lady, who I'll call "Ms. Smithers." She had one of those really old style lawn mowers, you know, with the blades that go around in a circle...... Well, she had a five acre spread, over really rocky terrain, and needless to say, as a 12 year old, it took me about 8 hours to finish the job. For the first four weeks, she paid me 5 lousy dollars for mowing her yard. I didn't really see what was so bad about it though, because at the time, candy bars were a quarter, and atari games were about 8$ a pop. One day, my pops asked me how much I was making doing Mrs. Smithers yard, and I told him $5. My old man completely flipped out when he heard that, adn demanded that I go and ask for a raise. Well, that Saturday, I went to her place, and asked for a raise, and her kind, sweet expression turned instantly sour, and she started nagging me saying "What, are you trying to rob me????" She completely refused to give me any kind of a raise, and said if I was just going to try and rob poor old women, I could go somewhere else to work. I left near tears, and went home. A few weeks later, I happened to be riding my bike by her house, and I saw this kid about my age mowing the lawn. I stopped by, and asked him how much he was making doing her lawn, and he said "20 bucks" His dad was also the Sherrif of our town.
