this time i really didn't do it
another lawyer story. ok, i was working for a new york law firm, where i was being underpaid and overworked. they were hiring people that i was training for more money off the street than they were willing to pay me, and i spent many hours working for free, but that's another story. so, i found another job, and left. that job didn't work out (another interesting story), and i was back looking. i ran into my old boss on the street, we got to talking and he mentioned that he was secretary-less, and would i be willing to return. being a little desperate, i agreed to make an appointment to discuss my return.i went in to talk to him, we agreed on all terms, but money. he sent me to the office administrator to discuss the details. she was new since the time i had worked there before. although i had been gone over a year, she offered me the exact same salary that i had been making when i had quit, over money. so, i said, very politely, that i couldn't return for that amount, thank you for your time, it was nice to meet you, etc. i stopped at the receptionist's desk, left a written message that things were not going to work out, thanx for the opportunity, goodbye. the boss was getting off the elevator as i was getting on, we stopped to chat, and he asked me my new start date. i said, i wouldn't be starting because of the money. he took me into his office, called the administrator and instructed her to pay my asking price, and said, can you start now?
well, the administrator was immediately incensed, and believed that i had forced the bosses hand in some manner. she made it her duty to get rid of me. every day he received (she didn't know that i saw everything, roflmao) a memo or a phone message outlining my depradations, and, most of them being true, i passed on every message. but the boss and i worked well together, so he didn't care, and i continued my wayward ways. finally, after two years, she just wore him down. he called me in to fire me (i already knew, of course, and had cleaned out my desk) and said that he didn't really want to do it, but he couldn't take the administrator complaining about it every day anymore.
one year later, he fired her and re-hired me. i worked for that law firm four different times, voluntarily quit twice, fired twice. finally, thank heavens, they went under! thanx to my excellent connections, of course, i got out ahead of the closing date.
