New story: NO reimbursement for travel!

Avatar simplyfiredstories submitted 605 days ago
I had been with the same company for five years. We're a contractor, and we lost a local contract in October of 2004. The CEO and CFO both told me if I wanted to, I could take a 90-day leave of absence until another local contract was secured. It was getting close to my 90 day deadline, so I was rehired and started traveling 130 miles away to a different job site, living out of a hotel until the local contract was signed. I was not paid per diem, gas reimbursement, and had to drive my own vehicle, plus pay a toll. Finally, I got fed up and let them know if I could not work from home (I was an office manager), then I would be forced to resign. They agreed to let me work from home, and even gave me a fax machine. I worked at home for a month until they asked me to come back to the job site that was far away. I traveled up there one day (they said the new higher up just wanted to meet me), only to sit in the office for 8 hours and then to be told I was being let go. They told me it was no reflection on my work, just that they could not afford to pay my hourly wage if I was so far from the job site. When I applied for unemployment, I received a letter from the state saying I was let go due to "unsatisfactory job performance". After being with a company for five long years, I got the royal treatment of a bad reference, no reason for being fired, 10,000 miles of wear and tear on my car, and no money.
