Fired Contractor full of dirt

I worked for a paving contractor. My job was to drive a dump truck and assist with loads of blacktop, sand, rocks, dirt etc.. as needed to complete the project.

Years ago we had to dig out a hill side to build a medium size parking lot and one of the neighbors who had a sunken backyard said that he will gladly take all the dirt if the contractor would be willing to use the backhoe tractor to level it all out. A deal was struck for a sum of money and I was told to start running dirt to this man's house and dump it into the backyard.

A month later the project was almost finished and the man's yard was filled with piles of dirt in a orderly fashion that will require quite some time with the backhoe to level out and make nice. We decided to have a CAT 936 whistled up and brought in for a few hours to fairly quickly level this man's land...(Have you checked the rental costs of these heavy equiptment by the hour lately?)

Evidently the man had a problem with the amount of man hours and equiptment needed to level the dirt out according to contract and refused to pay.

Well. Contractor says.. well we are done boys pack it up and head out! Having finished the parking lot nearby we formed up in a convoy and rolled past this man standing with a shovel in his hand looking over his 2 acres of dirt piles that needed leveling.

That was a long time ago and I wonder if that man is still shoveling the dirt after he fired my boss after seeing just how much it will cost him for the equiptment and manhours. (Hauling was free... but would have been a signficiant amount to the bill if charged)

Too bad too. The cost to fill a acre or two with a CAT 936 Front end loader is still cheaper than a bad back and a worse drainage problem in that man's basement after considering the grade of his property.
