Frequent flier miles!
I attended a conference using my own free mileage points so my nonprofit company wouldn't have to pay for air travel. When I returned from the conference, I received an email regarding a board meeting that night. When I inquired about the meeting, I was advised to talk with the chairman. The chairman informed me via his cell phone, this meeting was the second of two meetings, the first, the board voted to eliminate my position of Executive Director, from the budget. The board knew I was scheduled to have surgery in two weeks and would be out of work for a month, recuperating. My last day of employment would be a week after I would come back to work. This isn't so bad, however, during the surgery, breast cancer was discovered. Since I worked for a nonprofit organization which is exempt from paying into unemployment tax, I would not be eligible to collect unemployment if I didn't find a new job. Now I am facing another surgery for the cancer and chemotherapy. My only option since I cannot work, is to sell my house and live off the equity until I can get on my feet and work.
