Coworker stabbed me in the back- and LIED

I had worked as a Personnel Recruiter for a small staffing company, and was very good at my job. I had received many raises and bonuses in a very short amount of time. I was the hardest worker there and the only person who had made the company any money. I was mostly satisfied with my job even though I noticed a very quick turnover rate. I also noticed everyone who was terminated throughout my time there was a female.

When I started, there was an “office Manager” named John Doe and he had been there for about 6 months. Sadly- he being there at 6 months made him the employee who had been there the longest. He was in charge of office staff which consisted of 3 people.

John Doe and I got along fine at first. We had a lot in common. We shared a similar sense of humor. We shared personal problems and funny stories that happened to us. He invited me to his wedding, I bought him a wedding gift.

But gradually, I came to realize that John was not doing the job he was paid to do. He would openly refer to his position as “getting paid to do nothing”. Early on I also noticed that the only “work” he ever did was when he took credit for my progress. If I got someone hired or made a good recruit he’d pipe up, “WE got someone hired.” He was taking credit for my work and I didn’t stand up for myself out of fear that John would turn on me. I used to be training an employee and then John would tell the employee to do the opposite of what I said. When our boss told the employee he was doing it wrong, John would never own up to the fact that he was the wrong one- and my boss, stupidly, just believed him. John also never told my boss that I was giving him leads- he was just taking the credit for it himself- which I found out about at a later date.

He was frequently coming in an hour late and leaving an hour early. He would pretend to have “appointments” or take 2-3 hour lunches and I would cover for him. Our boss was only in the office about 3 hours a day and for some reason trusted John and never questioned anything. I noticed more and more that John was either in a complete awful mood one day, and then a great one the next. He was very unpredictable.

My boss was a very eccentric guy. He owned the business so he came and went as he pleased. Although I thought he was funny and kind, he was very inappropriate making sexual jokes (he’s been sued for sexual harassment twice in the past- John told me that) and he was extremely sexist (always asking men’s opinions and never a woman’s- reprimanding me if I gave him notice of a doctors appointment for the next week, but never saying a word if John took a day off with no excuse. He paid John for his week long Bachelor party in Vegas and his whole honeymoon but deducted my pay when I took off for my grandfathers funeral… ).

It was an ongoing joke in the office at how our boss would tell us to do one thing and then forget what he told us and make us do the opposite. Everyone partook in the story telling- especially John. John told us all about my bosses personal life and his affairs. John even had a “list of inappropriate things” our boss has done.

John’s wedding was coming up and he told the office of 4 people total that he was giving a months notice when he returned. He told us that he was going to lie to our boss and tell him that he was leaving to do something in the music biz instead of telling him that he was leaving to go to a competing firm. While he was on his honeymoon, I found out some sh*t that he said about me. I also found out that he tried recruiting the other employees to go with him to the new firm. The day before he came back to work my grandfather died. When I got back to work the next day I asked him how his honeymoon was. He said, “good” very nastily. Then throughout the whole day he didn’t say anything to me about my grandfather. From that moment I thought, “This guy is a complete asshole. He’s never done his work, he’s stabbed me in the back, he’s deceiving our boss, and he a pathological liar!” So I distanced myself from him. I mean, he was leaving anyway, right?

The time came when we were barely speaking, but I was so professional about it that nobody in the office knew what was going on. He never said anything to me so I kept my distance- knowing what a lying cheat he was, I didn’t want to get caught up in anything.

After a week of John kissing my boss’s ass (1 week before he was leaving) my boss gave a speech about team-work and how he was going to leave his executive office in the corner to come and sit next to me in a cubicle- all this crazy sh*t which I KNEW John put in his head. Also during that meeting my boss praised me for doing great work. He then went out to lunch with John.

Afterwards, a coworker and I were talking about my boss coming to sit next to me. She said (jokingly), “I think I’m going to probably start looking for another job.” I said (jokingly back to my coworker), “Yeah, if he sits out here, I think I’m going to have to leave. He’s just so loud and charismatic. It would be a distraction.” Everyone agreed.

I went to lunch. When I got back, my computer was off and my boss called me into his office and closed the door. Of course John was in the office with us after just going out to lunch with our boss and trash talking me. The boss said that he found out that I had been talking about him behind his back and also that he heard I was not being a team player. John told him I said, “If he sits next to me, I’m leaving!” which is not what I said AT ALL.

I was so shocked because I was such a great worker. All my coworkers were even more shocked because they didn’t know that John and I were no longer “friends”. The first thing that went through my head was, “john finally got me fired”.

As it turns out, John was lying to my boss for weeks about me. Nasty things that John had actually said about him and other people was blamed on me. John fed our boss a crazy amount of lies or “bending of the truth” and my boss just believes him because John is a man.

The funny part about this is that John is lying and deceiving my boss as we speak about what his new job is and the fact the he tried to recruit his own office staff to go with him!

I tried speaking with my boss to explain what exactly was going on in his office and my boss ended up HANGING UP ON ME like a baby.

This is for the best, but if my boss wasn’t so sexist and completely blind to what is going on in his own company, he would see that he fired to one person who was essentially sticking up for him.

John knows what he has done. He knows that he’s a pathological, miserable, lazy, backstabbing, deceiving, LIAR and he WILL get what he deserves. I hope I’m around to laugh in his face when Karma comes to kick him in the ass.
