I worked for a community mental health center for three and a half years, regularly earning praise and merit raises from my boss. One day, all the employees (there were about 40 of us) were called into the conference room, and informed by management that our work unit was being closed in two months. The cold-hearted admin. person who delivered the blow was careful not to say anything about re-employing anyone in a different sector. We were all given a form letter saying the company "appreciated" us, and that we were expected to hold on to the end, working at the unit until it was closed. I was devestated. I sought out support from my boss, but she hid out in her office. At last, to dull the pain, I had a few drinks. Not being used to alcohol, i had to lie down on the couch in my office. I missed a meeting, and as a result, finally someone came to check on me. I was taken to the hospital. The next day, I called in sick, but left instructions about the care of my clients. One day later, I got a fed-ex package firing me. My boss and former coworkers would not return my calls. I am still having trouble recovering from the experience, because although I have tried to find a new position, my former workplace poisons my reputation (up to then, spotless), and no one will give me a second chance. Because i loved my job, and it was so important to me, I made a mistake that looks like it has ended my career.
