I had been working off and on for three years as a sub in the third-largest school district in the state. A couple of months ago, I put a video on YouTube where I told students to get their work done and graduate. A lot of students left vulgar and stupid comments, which i ignored. One day at the end of 6th period at one of the high schools, a teacher told me I was wanted at the office. When I went in there, the principal had a printout of the YouTube comments and told me he did not like them. He told me that my services would be no longer needed at that school and that he had requested that the school board take me off the sub list. He then had security escort me out of the building while another teacher covered what was supposed to be my 7th period class. I met with the HR people at the school board office and they told me that it was unprofessional for a school board employee to allow that kind of language on the Internet. I told them that it had nothing to do with my classroom performance, as I was a good sub, but they were so stubborn and hard-hearted that they would not listen to me. I tried to appeal a few weeks later, and the HR director kicked me out of his office. My job was to fill in for the regular teacher, not be the students mom and dad. Maybe the parents should watch what their children post on the Internet. I will try appealing this when they get some new (hopefully open-minded) people in the HR department. I have been applying for jobs since then and had a few interviews. It will be a matter of time before another company snatches me up.
Well would you preffer to not be fired and have some parent contact the media? I can guarentee if that happens you will not work in any state in the U.S, the media has a habit of blowing everything out of proportion when they have video they can publish.
I wouldn't work in the public school system for anything! Not only are students rude and disrespectful (even in elementary school) but you run the risk of being accused of precisely this. A friend of mine who is a tenured high school teacher was asked by her English class what was her favorite book. She said "Gone With the Wind." A few days later a parent wrote a "letter to the editor" accusing the teacher of being racist. She wasn't fired but was raked over the coals and told to keep her mouth shut.
K, so something similar just happened to me today at my old job. I worked for Nordstrom until 3pm instead of 4pm. Why? This coworker of mine was on my friend list on my My-space, which I had set it to private meaning it is not viewable by anyone else who's not on my list.
I posted a blog saying "nappy headed cunt," which was toward some girls I knew back then, and one of the girls lived with me for a couple of weeks. Anyway, the coworker on my friend list is African American and felt so offended by the word "nappy headed" that she decided to gossip about me to another black coworker at work. So now I got two black girls against me. They decided to print out my blog, brought it to work, and discussed it to human resource. HR had the nerve to question who I was stating the blog about, why, and if it was not to the black girls, it was very offensive and racist of me to do so, and that I'm termed period. Hr. also said I'm fired not because of the complaint but the fact it got brought to work by a coworker on my page, so that meant that it was work related. WTH. How is that work related? Later she said, that she and another manager whom I never met name Chris as well made the choice to term my position because it was their personal view of my page. I said, well you shouldn't even have seen my page, because it was private, you saw it through people who were gossiping about me to begin with. My free speech is something offered in the amendments. I have the freedom of speech, can have a web page, or publish anything out there. Nordstrom had no business in questioning about my personal life outside of work, my set to private web page. So anyway I was terminated for that. She and another manager made the personal choice to fire me because the words were derogatory towards blacks as a common sense, even if it's not in the dictionary, and that My-space is unique and is work related," according to Chris the Hr lady. She also had the nerve to suggest me to apply for Starbucks and get on unemployment right away. She offered me her business card and said I can even use her as a personal reference to help me get a job. LOL! So I lastly asked Chris Rominger who fired me what's my termination say on her computer, she says "poor performance." WTF. I thought I got fired because of Myspace. Right?
Anyhow, this is her Nordstrom business card she left me with the cash they just paid me due to my termination.
