Boss's wife hates me

I had been with my company for seven years, managing the business for the past three years. A year and a half ago my boss got married and the wife, who had always been "fake nice" to me all of a sudden decided she didn't like me (for no apparent reason other than a history of insecurity toward other women). A few months ago I was diagnosed with cancer (in my 20's) and forced to take a medical leave. I was promised my job back regardless of how long it took to get well. Now, finally in remission, I contacted my employer to arrange a start date and was told that I couldn't be hired back because the wife wouldn't allow it (she does not work at the business, or at all for that matter). Now I'm cancer-free but unemployed - the working world is really fair, isn't it?
