Less than a year ago a friend of nearly 17 years asked me whether I'd be interested in managing a bookstore she was buying in New Mexico. Being a bookseller, I told her I had little experience in managing-but since we both loved books she convinced me.

Within 3 months I sold my house in VA, quit my job of 6 years, fought a custody battle for my 16 year old to accompany me, left my other 2 children behind and drove to NM.

She came to visit after just 6 weeks, and I could tell she just HATED ME in her store. At Christmas the other 2 employees recieve bonuses-not me. In January she demoted me. Then she ignored me and left me out of store decisions. She created a power dynamic between the employees.

I showed up for work every day. I worked off the clock. I never stole or undermined the store in any way. Customers loved me-which is what she hated most of all!!!

Last week she fired me for "not having enough interest in the store"!

I'm now stuck in an economically depressed place, with a senior in high school and a mortgage payment!
With friends like this I don't need enemies!
