So it was a beaatiful day and about 3 months earlier a friend of mine got let go from a very large international company. So over the course of the next 3 months I began to hate my job. I took some time off for stress and then returned to work after about 3 weeks..... when I returned I was really nervous and still not doing that great... but they brought me back and put me on light duty doing 2nd level technical support for the company. Which in itself was not that bad.... but the boss I had and the 2 morons in the department made up for the work being good and everyone else being great to deal with. So while I was out, I came to find out that another person had also been of on sick leave for the same reasons as me... so when I came back they decided that person that covered while everyone was gone deserved a break and was put on a project that would let him relax for bit.... So basically he got a break for doing his job... and being part of the team... well this did not sit well with me... so about 2 weeks later my boss says he wants to do my review so I said ok... and he started about my work and how I was not pulling my weight and showed me a bunch of skewed stats that showed I wasn't. So I decided to do some of my own stats gathering and in the end it showed that I was busting my butt just as hard as he was and that I was never rewarded for it. So I told my boss I did not agree with this and felt it was unfair. He decided that we needed to speak to HR... well I was not in the correct frame of mind to seek out HR so I waited a bit and went and saw them on my own. In my meeting with HR I basically said that this is crap I was working just as hard and showed them my stats.. basically said that my boss was playing favorites and it was crap and I wanted some respect and to be treated the same.... Well needless to say the next day I came in to work I was asked to go to HR with my boss so I told him there was something I needed to do first. So I walked around the building saying goodbye to everyone and wished them the best of luck... which they could not figure out for the life of them. Well that morning I was offered a severance package and asked to resign for basically saying my boss was an a'hole... Needless to say I am doing much better now and I have a union backing me :D in my new job....
Maybe it's the way you tell the story, but it seems to me that the company was perfectly reasonable. You took time off for 'stress' and begrudged another employee doing the same when you got back? ("So basically he got a break for doing his job... and being part of the team... well this did not sit well with me...") Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. So now you're in a union job. Great...another reason for people to hate unions. Unions are the best thing in the world of work--unless you have members who think a union is there to cover laziness, a false sense of entitlement or bad attitudes.
