WorldWide Porn Call
Six long and dedicated years at this leading internet company and all it took was one prank that didn't sit well with my new manager to give me my walking papers.
The worst part about this prank was that it happened during a nationwide conference call that I didn't even have to dial into because I was on vacation. But being the glutton for punishment that I am, I dialed in from home on my very first day of vacation. The President of the company was droning on and on via speakerphone to offices around the world as well as to people in person at the HQ. Everyone had dialed into an 800 number and was following a powerpoint presentation on the computer using meeting software that allows you to watch a slide show and also type questions or comments into a chat section that everyone can see.
The problem was that no one could hear the President speaking. Employees in satellite offices around the globe kept typing in messages in the chat section online asking anyone at HQ to let him know that we couldn't hear him. "Is anyone there?", "we can't hear you", "can you adjust the speakerphone?". After ten minutes of this and no one at HQ responing, I thought it would be funny to type in a message of my own into the chat. It said, "hey everyone, I have a new phone number you can dial into for better clarity!". I proceeded to type into the chat section the phone number 1-800-328-4475. This was a number that I had learned throughout the years as a great prank number that you could dial then transfer the call to your buddy's extension to get a quick laugh.
The result was that virtually everyone around the globe, all our satellite offices in the states, our technology division in India, managers with conference rooms full of employees all dialed into this number and all of them on speakerphone. What they found out really quick was that this number wasn't a line into the conference call but a porn line that gives you some very funny porn style music and dialogue while asking you to enter your credit card. I found out later that many people who were sitting in conference rooms while their managers squirmed while falling for my prank could hardly hold in their laughter. One manager had some new hires in his meeting and literally jumped over the conference room table to hang up the phone. Three days after coming back from vacation, pig-vomit visited my office and had me pack up my things.
Would I do it again? Probably not...it's never good to get fired but it sure was a good prank that will get passed down through the employee generations and will live long after my contributions to the company have been forgotten.
