Fired for Zombie Attack
I was fired a few years ago from a summer job at a beach. In hindsight I suppose this is funny, but at the time I was terrified.THE SETTING: This beach is home to several endangered species of bird (piping plovers and terns) which, depending on their nest locations, caused us to close down portions of the beach to vehicle access. Our job entailed monitoring of the birds, trash removal, guarding the access gate 24-7, and basically being yelled at by the general public (try telling a family they can't go to the beach because of birds, they won't like it).
It was a cushy town job with significant down-time. During the day there'd be a bunch of us college-age employees just hanging out. At night there'd be one of us on a midnight-8am shift, just to make sure no cars 'ran the gate' and drove all over the beach/bird nests.
THE INCIDENT: So there I was, at about 3am, sitting in a town truck in the middle of nowhere and not another soul for miles. I was reading a book with a flashlight because it was pitch black outside. Suddenly, I heard something. I shined the light up and 50 feet in front of me I see a girl in a prom dress and a bouquet of flowers walking like a zombie (somber and slow, like in a wedding processional) along the road. I was so afraid that I just froze - I couldn't even turn on the headlights! It seemed like forever
before she was out of sight (she walked parallel to the front of the truck
and into the dunes, never acknowledging I existed).
I spent the rest of the night weighing the possibility of going home versus being fired for leaving the gate unguarded. I was freaking out and counting the minutes until sunrise. When I told the morning crew what happened, they all started laughing. It was a big prank. The girl was a friend of one of my coworkers.
THE RESULTS: When my boss heard about this, she fired me for not calling her or the police during the night! I had certainly thought about it, but what could they have done??? Besides laughing at me, or otherwise not believing me, if they had even found the ghost girl it wasn't like she was breaking the law.
I figured I would have been fired if I *did* call her or the police. Oh
well, there was only two more weeks left to the summer anyway. As it turns out, the prankster coworker behind it all was also fired. Him and the girl have since apologized, and we're all pretty good friends now. Any ideas on revenge (without anyone losing their jobs, of course)?
