Fired for having Mono

I got a job my sophmore year of college at a little shoe store in the downtown area where I lived. The guy basically hired me on the spot, and since I was desperate to make some money, all I could do was oblige, even though I was a bit wary of the manager. I worked one weekend, maybe a total of 20 hours. During that time my boss had me watch security feed, follow people around the store, tell people that the shoes would natural adjust to their feet, rearrange boxes, and schmooze up customers. I did a very good job and made a lot of sales, but they wouldn't let me work the register, had had a woman who barely spoke english do it (she was also paid commision on the sale I MADE). Unfortunately, 3 days after I got the job I contracted mono and was in isolation/resting period for 4 weeks. The guy said he would hold my job for me, and to call him when my doctor said it was ok to go back to work. I told him I was very thankful, and he said it was no problem. 4 weeks later I called back to say I was ready to work again, but the manager told me that I was being fired because I had been away too long and they had found someone else to fill my position. I reminded him of our oral agreement and he said he had made no such deal and hung up on me. About 8 months later I got a call for that same store saying they had my resume and was wondering if I could go in for an interview. Needless to say, I told him no, and that I didn't want to work for someone who didn't keep their promises and had poor business practices. He said he had no idea what I was talking about, and obviously didn't remember me so I hung up on him. Later that year the store went out of business.
