Someone else fired stories...
Since we have seen a number of two-party fired stories (a fired story about someone other than the person telling the story) I have to share this one. While working as a computer programmer, I had been noticing that one of our new hires was always in the office before I got there (and I usually get in quite a bit early) and was still there working when I left (and I frequently left later than the 'official' quitting time). I also noticed that he kept his cubicle really clean and neat, but I didn't put two and two together for quite a while.
One of my co-workers came to me one day, and told of something she'd seen. She had forgotten something that she left at her desk after leaving for the day on Friday and so that night she dropped back by the office very late (around midnight) to get it. After she let herself into the front door and past the security guard, she went up to her cubicle and heard a very strange noise. She investigated and sleeping under his desk (in a sleeping bag) was the new hire that was 'always there'.
We found out that he had been looking for an apartment after he moved down, but wasn't having any luck, so rather than sleep in his car he decided to sleep in his cubicle 'just for a few nights'. He was taking showers at the YMCA (which was only a block away) and keeping most of his belongings in a mini-storage place a few miles away, and his mail was going to a PO box.
Basically, after a few weeks of living in his cube, he decided that he liked saving the rent money and just gave up looking for a place to live. I told him that I didn't think that situation would last, but he thought he was pretty clever. Well, one of the managers found out (no, I didn't rat the guy out, but once two people know a 'secret', it's not a secret for very long). He had a one on one talk with the guy and made him promise to have an apartment within a week (or some other living arraingement other than living at the company headquarters). A couple of weeks went by, he assured the manager that he had moved into an apartment, and then he was discovered STILL sleeping in the office building, just not in his cubicle anymore. Now he was sleeping in a utility closet that only the night workers used (not sure how he was avoiding them, unless he knew their schedule).
Anyway, he was fired for not paying rent....ever....and being at work all of the time. Of course this also meant that he became both unemployed and homeless at the same time...
