Staff meeting for mass firing!

Avatar simplyfiredstories submitted 518 days ago
The setting: Bedford, NH at one of the largest insurance companies in the world.

The time: End of November, 1994 (before most people knew what "outsourcing" was).

9 AM: all employees staff meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in Bedford,NH. All employees were required to attend, even though on vacation, leave including maternity) and any other reasons for a day off.

Everyone attending was told they had were being given 30 days notice and were fired. This even included the Vice President in charge of the facility. He, too, had no clue why the meeting was being held.

Everyone was also told that all the current jobs would be available at a large outsourcing company located in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Everyone was encouraged to apply for their former job.

Most people did apply; everyone who applied, was hired.

30 days later when people were supposed to report to NC, no one did.
They had fired 275 people and not one took the offer to move to NC.

The really ironic thing was that, one year later (of a 2 year contract),the outsourcer was fired and all the jobs were rehired by the insurance company. Unfortunately, the new location was South Manhattan, NY. However, the VPs, and other management people that had recommended the outsourcing, were all fired at that time.
